I don't know if this is the place to ask. This is the first time for me to have mini foals. I had one born monday morning. Thought all was well vet came out everything looked good yesterday. Today things were fine. Went out tonight and mare is having reddish/brown discharge. Don't know if this is normal. This mare is getting real aggresive so we are trying not to make her to mad. I had to clean her up but she was not happy. I want to see what she is like in a couple of hours and in the morning. All the reading I have done is up to foaling and about the foal. What about the mare. She passed the placenta just fine. I would be greatful for any help. Rhonda Itty Bitty Farm

Rhonda - I wish I could help you with an intelligent answer, but I've never had a mare do this before. You said that she passed everything? (placenta) and it was all intact? Did the vet check it? How much discharge is there? Sorry for all the questions, but it's hard to figure out or make suggest something when I can't see what she's doing I'm wondering if it's just old blood that's coming out - still draining? You may want to contact your vet again - just to be safe.

If the Vet did indeed check everything out okay, then not to worry. The mares tend to get somewhat nasty in the back end as every thing finishes cleaning out. Some mare also get extremely protective & space issue oriented after foaling. She should "come around" and respect you with in a reasonably amount of time. I always handle my new mom's with a halter & lead rope for this very reason. Be firm, but loving and she will respect you and within reason do what you ask Good Luck, and Show us the pictures!

Hi Rhonda, We had a mare do the same thing a couple years ago - she passed the placenta fine, but had a bloody, red-brown discharge that started a little over a day later. It was a uterine infection - she was cleaned by the vet and put on antibiotics. It could be blood from the delivery, but if it is still continuting, I would call your vet to check her to be sure. Those infections can be nasty if not treated, but can be cleared up fairly easily if caught. Hope everything goes ok!

Called the vet he thinks all is fine. He said he wants me to keep an eye on it. He should be coming out in a day or so if Velvet would just give up her foal. she is at 354 days. I will keep all posted. I am not sure how to post pictures. I am new to all this message board stuff I can't even get my forum on my website to work right. LOL Rhonda
