I'm at a loss...I truly am. We've had alot of first this year and some of them were good and some were bad. Had a twisted cord - first time we've lost a foal. Had a foal born didn't make it out of the sack. Had a mare give birth standing up and then try to kill us when we went in the stall. Had two mares foal unattending outside. Had a preemie who is doing great. And now we've had a septic foal. Mystery was fine at birth....and when I watched her on the cam the first day she was in the stall with Cinny, I noticed that there were times she would stumble. I attributed that to her being newborn. Heaven knows, I'm 45 and I still stumble, so goodness...she should have that right. Then Frank jr took the video cam to the barn yesterday morning to film Cinny and Mystery going out for the first time. I'm fighting a bad case of bronchitis and I haven't been to the barn in days....but I wanted to see this even. Something about that little filly touched me and I was planning to keep her. So I wanted to see her first outing and see her run.....well, she didn't - never did run. When she left the stall Grandpa said on cam, "She has the runs". No one told me - I caught it Saturday afternoon when I was editing the video. I asked my son about it and he said that he forgot to tell me. I understand that - he's new to the horses and doesn't realize how important diarrhea is in a newborn. And he's been doing all my work while I've been trying to recover from this bronchitis. I should have called our vet Amy right then - and maybe we'd have a live foal. Maybe Mystery would not have died needlessly. But I didn't. Discovery had diarrhea for several days when he was born - and he was fine....so I assumed that Mystery would be too. This morning Frank jr. called and told me that we had a problem. Mysterm was weak and wouldn't get up. I ran to the barn with baby bottles prepared to make her drink. No luck...she was cold around her mouth and her gums were purple. She wouldn't even swallow as I poured the milk into her mouth - it all ran back out. Amy came and told us to get on the road NOW to Georgia....the prognosis wasn't good. She gave her a bolust of Glucose which perked her up a bit. Guess I should have insistedon an IV for the ride, but Amy was afraid it would blow her vein. We made it 1 1/2 hours - exactly 1/2 way to the hospital when she left us. She just didn't want to stay any more in her sick little body. I was good until I had to put her in the stall with Cinny - then I lost it. It just broke my heart. Now everytime I walk in the stall Cinny goes to the spot that I had laid her - she smells it and looks at me. I'm not sure if she's wondering why or if she just wants me to put her back. I would have left her with Cinny longer, but we had to preserve her body for the Necropsy. We want to know what caused this so maybe we can prevent it in our next foals. Naturally I'm going to be more paranoid with Rowdy and Shandy now. Thank you everyone for your thoughts, prayers, well wishes and concern. My heart is broken, but I can't imagine what Cinny is going through. She needs the prayers...... I'm giving her herbs to help calm her as she deals with this. Hopefully they will give her some peace. I'll update as soon as I know more.
