Hope no one minds me cross posting, but I just got word from some friends on another board that one of their stud colts was stolen from their place in West Plains, MO. Here is a copy of one of Jen of Desert Jewel and Whispering Wind Gypsies posts "OK...It's Bryant. Last night the horses were checked and all accounted for. The lock was place on the gate and all was well. Sometime between 12am and 8am this morning, someone took the lock and the horse. I have updated our home page to reflect him as missing and I hope to God the person that took him is just a simple, unsophisticated horse thief. I pray he turns up as I am just sick to my stomach about this. Thanks everyone. Jen" There are photos of him on the front page of her website: www.djwwgypsyhorses.com/index.html

Yes, he was just recovered about an hour ago. Here is her post: Just got a call. One of the neighbors had called her daughter who worked in town about 1/2 hour away and told her what was going on and asked her to spread the word. The police there got a call that someone had a "stray horse" in their yard!
Someone saw someone with a trailer speed off after they apparently turned him loose in someone's front yard! We're still investigating the details, but the good news is
IT'S HIM AND HE'S SAFE AND ALIVE!!! THEY'RE PICKING HIM UP AS WE SPEAK!!!
I do want to tell you all that I am so greatful to have such a wonderful support network here and just want you all to know how thankful I am for you. Knowing that this chain of caring people was out there spreading the word has most certainly set my heart at peace, knowing that despite the fact that evil exists, goodness in the opposite extreme exists as well. Thank the Lord all is well and Bryant is on his way back!
This has been such a wake up call and I am without a doubt going to press the issue of security to the fullest extent. Here in AZ we have such limited space that if someone even pulled into the drive, the zebra and the dog would have the 3 closest neighbors up in minutes. If my horses are going to rotate out to MO for some fun running in the grass, I certainly have to start thinking in terms of different security measures. We do have a Donkey on site and Great Danes in the house but it would be nice to put some additional measures into place. I am very interested in the GPS chip and will run that to ground. We also use radio telemetry devices when tracking our rehabilitated wildlife which may be an option as well. I've got a lot to think about.
Thank you all once again. My heart is still racing!

I guess whoever had stolen it, realized how hard it was going to be to hide him. Such a big and magnificent creature, you couldn't hide his beauty. I'm so glad that he is safe home. What a terrible loss that would have been! God took care of your horse.

So glad that everyone is safe and sound. I can't imagine what I'd do if I found Casper missing.

That's one of the reasons the gypsy people bred colorful horses. Each one's unique color and pattern made it hard to steal. GPS chips are good but have a number of things that can influence their effectiveness. Micro chipping is good too but also has some downsides. Someone I knew had all of their animals micro chipped and put up signs all over the property that said all animals were micro chipped and registered. The chips were registered with their vets and with the animal's registry. They also had video cams up in different places. Some were fakes and some weren't. A few cams were placed so that they read license plates. They had signs up that said visitors were under video surveillance. Of course a dog that barks is a great first defense. Doesn't have to bite and can be any size. I saw a program featuring big time robbers. They said the one thing they were afraid of most was a barking dog. Barking dogs often alerted someone and that was not a good thing in their line of work. There are also various alarms for outside of your home and farm. A friend used a bell inside the house to announce anyone entering the property. It was one of those that you used to see at gas stations. You drove over a hose and the bell rang. The hose stretched across their driveway and was connected to a bell inside the house. Good thing about this was it still worked even with no power. One last thing and an important one is to have your farm well lit at night. This includes your house, barn and driveway. Thieves like to work in darkness. Contact your police department or a security firm and ask them to assess your property. They will tell you what you need to do to help secure your place. They are professionals and may spot areas that you missed. I am so glad Bryant was found. What a blessing for sure.
