Cute - I used to have hermit crabs when I was a teenager. They're an easy pet - take good care of them and they'll live a long time.

How adorable!! We went to a pet store this morning and I saw so many cute shells for them, my favorite was the Nascar shell...lol We are thinking of getting my 8 y.o. son a hermit crab for his birthday this fall, it will be easy for him to take care of and he wants a pet of his very own. Do they need a companion or can we get just one, and what do they eat?

the pet store will usually supple you with hermit crab food - little pellets similar looking to pelleted horse grian - they don't eat much at all though should be a nice pet for your 8 year old!

the bigger ones do seem to be easier to handle, especially for little hands, as the smaller ones are more insecure and tend to be a bit pinchy. Also, I did a science fair project with them (have had them for years, have three at the moment (einstein, mendel, and newton) if you give them the calcium water/any kind of calcium supplement, please give them a vit. D supplement also, otherwise their little exoskeletons become to thick for them to molt, and they don't survive long after trying to molt. I love them, and because they normally live in colonies I always keep them with buddies, but that is up to you. Anyways....I love HERMIES (nots as much as Capser aka Baby though) Congrats and Good luck.

I wish I could buy/find hermit crabs with that shell color. I'd be going insane if I did. Say did you buy or find them? I would adore having some but I think my dog would eat them .

The shells have been painted Kristy. The pet store we went to had so many different shells painted with different designs and logos on them. As the hermit crab outgrows his shell, he'll look for a bigger one, so it helps to have several in bigger sizes for him to move into. (I've been researching...lol) Any pet store that has hermit crabs should have extra shells for you to choose from...hope this helps!!

I say the same as Kristy. I would LOVE to have hermit crabs. and Kristy, Jenna wouldn't eat them, cause they would be a in a tank or something. I dont think she would be able to open the tank and stick her mouth in there Anyways, they are soooo cute Amber!!!
