I never go out to the barn in the middle of the day. But I'm glad that I did today........
I drove up to the door and saw flames near Casper's stall. The stall fan on the stall next to his had caught fire. Everyone was on lunch break, so it was just me the horses and the fire. I unplugged the fan, called 911, moved Nemo (18 h holstiener in the burning stall),moved casper, then someone showed up and put the fire out with a water hose.
When the fire men showed up, they said ALWAYS call even if you know you can get the fire out and that the cause of the fire was a DIRTY stall fan.
How many of us forget to clean our stall fans??? They said it was important (esp. in a highly combustible building like a barn) to take the fans down and hose them off once or twice a month dep. on the dust level in your barn. He also said they would dry quickly and could be rehung withing a few hours.
BUT MAKE SURE THEY ARE DRY BEFORE YOU PLUG THEM BACK IN!!!!
Anywho, that fire was my worst nightmare...thank GOD no one (human or horse) was hurt or worse. I just hope it will remind everyone to watch there barn and their fans.

I'm very happy to report, that neither Nemo or Casper are showing any signs of smoke inhalation!! (Does Happy Dance ) Also, there was new note on the barn board: "All Stall Fans must remain unplugged until further notice." Atleast some good came from taking 5 years off of Nemo's life ( lol )

I am glad everything worked out! You indeed had someone watching over you and your horses. One would never think of something so simple like this I'm sure. Thanks for posting this! Connie

Never heard of hosing fans to clean them - wouldn't think the water would be good for the motors, but you could also vaccuum them out - vaccuum from the back of the fan to pull dust and stuff out the way it got in. Fan screens can also usually be unscrewed so that the blades can be wiped down.
