Do studs usually lose weight during the breeding season, especially if they are very active and much used breeders?

It's not uncommon for studs to lose some weight but they shouldn't look like they are starving. A stud should be in prime shape before breeding. Have a vet give him a good going over and make sure he's up to date on everything before breeding him.

Very common. Partly it depends on what you mean by "lose weight", but especially in the summer heat, stallions "in use" drop weight. It's a strenuous job! He shouldn't have bony withers and back, pointy hips, etc, which would indicate he is being over used or underfed, or both. But it is common for a stud to get very wasp-waisted, have his belly tuck up and show pronounced ab muscle ridges running lengthwise, and to show a hint of rib. My Belgian/QH stallion lost weight during breeding season whether he was... err... "working" or not. He was otherwise quite rotund, but would lose weight just from fretting over those sweet-smelling ladies.

Yes, its very common - we just bulk up their feed. There was one point where Hot Shot looked very ribby to me and I kept telling my daughter that he was looking bad. We finally increased his feed and put him on weight builder. He looks lean and fit now, but not boney.

Yes they can but our stallion whome is 19 this year has NEVER gotten ribby or lost much weight at all until this year when we let him tease a mare for a friend so she could AI her to another stud. Well our stud got all worked up and stressed when he got his girl taken away and he could do his duty he dropped so much wight and is ribby now. But gaining back quickly. Depends on how you feed them and all. We us Fastrack and it keeps him plump and round usually unitl now when we did the above, and never will do that again!
