Heiress is doing ok. We had a setback of sorts yesterday. The night before I put a neck cradle on her so that she couldn't pick at her wound and in the morning I found the door to her stall and the neck cradle broken. She was very frightened but seemed to be ok except that a couple of her stitches popped and her wound was oozing a lot. I can only guess that she somehow got the cradle caught on the door (which is wierd because it's a smooth door) and that she freaked. Thank God, she didn't break her neck. Today her wound is not draining as much as it did yesterday but there is definitely more swelling in it than there had been. I'm watching her closely. She appears to be more relaxed today. Thanks everyone for your concern. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks to Judy for watching to twins and letting me know that Trouble had been cast again. I thought we were past that with him but apparently not. He got a small scuff on his hock that has a little swelling in it today but other than that he's good.
He is just the sweetest horse. This whole twin thing and being third in the pecking order has turned him into a great citizen. He is absolutely the sweetest colt I have ever raised and that's saying something because I've raised some great colts. As much as I love Surprise with all her spunk and attitude, Trouble has his own firm spot in my heart. BTW he's now 300 pounds!! How exciting is that?

Trouble and Surprise would like to say "Happy Thanksgiving" to all their mare stare friends. While they're not up for any turkey they are looking forward to their first treat of carrots this afternoon. They've seen Vee get them and tried to horn in to get a taste but never been able to have the treat before now. They're both such munch mouths, I'm sure they'll enjoy them.

The twins did love their carrots. I didn't get it done yesterday, seemed like something was always getting in the way but grabbed a handful of carrots when I went out this morning to do Heiress's meds so I could make it all in one trip.
Vee and the babes had their hay strung out everywhere as usual and Surprise was not too sure she wanted to give up breakfast for whatever I had in my hand. But Vee, of course, smelled them right away and was all over me sniffing and hunting for them. I snapped of a small piece for Surprise and let her smell it but she thought she wanted hay more. So I pushed it up into her mouth. She's had so much stuff in there by me, she immediately went to chewing (instead of pushing it out like the other foals) and her face lite up when she got a taste and she started nosing at me just like her mom. Trouble, on the other hand, was taking advantage of mom being distracted and he went straight to nursing. I'm not sure if he got his fill or finally got curious about what his mom and sister were getting and he wasn't, but he finally came up to me to investigate what Vee and Surprise were eating. I put a small piece of carrot in front of him and Vee grabbed it right out of my hand so that made him think that it must be good and he started nosing me too. He tried to bite the carrot but couldn't quite get that figured out so I shoved a piece in through the corner of him mouth and he did the same thing that Surprise had done. You could just watch as he got a sweet taste of it as the expression washed over his face. After that he and his sister both were eating little pieces of carrot right out of my hands.
Never did get the other foals to figure it out. If I pushed a piece in at the corner of their mouths like I did the twins, they just pushed it back out at me as quickly as I pushed it in. So for now, the twins are the privileged ones getting carrots.
Heiress has had it with getting meds. The minute you go into her stall she heads for the corner. So this morning she got carrots after her meds and she was much happier. Her wound is worrying me a little. A couple more stitches have popped and it's bleeding again and still draining a lot. But it's not infected yet, so that part is good. I'm afraid it's going to leave quite a scar. It also is sagging between some of the stitches but I don't think it's deteriorated enough to have the vet out to debreed it and restitch it at this time. If it doesn't turn around soon, we'll probably have to go that route. I'm monitoring her temp and stuff, just in case things go south. I want to be on top of anything that might arise.

MiKael, you are a real trouper! In the midst of floods and all perils, you've got the presence of mind to stop and smell the carrots along the way. (I have always felt just a twinge of ambivalence, teaching a horse to enjoy the sin of treats. LOL!) Best of luck with Heiress. She's in the best of hands. And thanks again and again for regaling us with all your tales of the twins! I love following their progress and reading your colorful reports.

I'm so glad that the twins loved their treat! They are trying to be such good sports about the blankets and poor Trouble getting shoved away from mom at every opportunity. Heiress is in the best of hands, those of someone she loves. I can only think happy thoughts for her and you and send prayers as I have been doing. Just never forget us, no matter how busy you are or how hectic it gets, remember that you have friends from all over the world who are willing to offer you a sounding board, a sympathetic ear, advice, or just to share a laugh with you. We are here and always willing to listen!

Actually, I think that the twins like their blankets. I try to take them on and off regularly so they get experience with them and when I hold one up, they're both trying to stick their heads into the neck hole. That would be a picture, wouldn't it. I think that this darn wind we're having is cold enough that they like the toasty warm their blankets make them. I know that Legs will tell us when he needs his. And if he doesn't get his neck warmer on too, he won't let you leave his stall. He paws and shakes his head telling us we're missing something. Heiress has been glad to have a blanket on too. I don't put them on the broodmares but have one on her to protect that wound. She's always helping to put in on by putting her head in and flipping the blanket up her neck. Surprise is just now starting to flip hers up. It's pretty cute. I've gone out each day with treats to see if the carrot lesson stuck Surprise is definitely in to carrots. Trouble on the other hand, only wants the smaller, sweeter more tender ones. He spits out the bigger ends and lets his sister root for them in the shavings. Surprise doesn't have a problem with eating his leftovers. Yesterday we actually saw the sun here and most of my horses got out for the day. Heiress was very upset to be in when her cronies got to go out but there's no way she can go out with that wound. It seems to be draining less but it's going to be an ugly scar. She's supposed to go off of antibiotics today but I think I'm going to keep her on them until the draining part is over. The wind and rain are back this afternoon and we've already hit a record here for the most recorded rainfall in one month ever. I have a friend who was judging a show in Italy and our weather was on the news there. Guess that tells how really bad it is. But my barns are still staying dry. Even a little break gives the creek a chance to recede so we're holding our own. We got enough of a break Dave got part of the leaking roof fixed and soon I should be able to bring my other mare home. I sure do miss her.

I can just see them flipping the blankets over. I'm glad Heiress's wound is draining less. You guys really need at least a week of dry weather before the snow hits. The news in Italy....it must be bad out there.
