I am considering closing the message boards so that only those that are registered can view them. This will help keep the "trolls" from other boards away. If they are serious "starers" then they will register and be a "producive" part of the Mare Stare family.

We've had to do that on another message board I am a part of. Unfortunately, we have found it's necessary, but it has certainly helped with the trolls and spammers, also. I would also suggest that you have to register to even view the cams as well. (unless that is what you mean with the message board registration)
A little off the subject, but I was wondering how difficult it would be to set it up so that the low and high alerts could be sent to a cell phone? (along with not knowing nothin' bout birthin' no horses, I also don't know nothin' bout making computers work either!) (come to think of it, there's not much i DO know much about!)

The alert system is owned by Foalcams.com. Not sure if he's going to make any upgrades any time soon, but I'll send it to him as a suggestion.

Love the Idea! I am all for it. I was one that noticed the names that were involved the other day. Yes they all had just made the names on that day. I did get ahold of a moderator that day, it took me time to find one that was on. Maybe an area that would tell us who the current ones are online at the time. I know about the name on the general board at the bottom that shows everyone on, but that day around that time there were 221??? I think, ha!. But I am all for registering.

If it helps keep the rude comments away, I'm all for it. But I was wondering, will you be able to register even if you don't have a cam of your own?
I have NO problem registering, but I don't want to lose this priveledge just because I don't have a cam of my own. PLEEEAAAASSSSSEEE don't take it away from meeeeeeee lolol.

Heather, I'm sure you are aware that I recently had to close my board to the public for similar reasons - this time because of the numerous spam posts I was getting, but I seriously contemplated it last year when we received some very hurtful posts at the time when one of our mares foaled a lethal white.
I didn't *think* I wanted to close my board to the public, but in actuality... if people have nothing to hide or fear, then they will have no problem becoming a registered member, and I definately feel more in control of my board. Now, I have received some emails from ppl *voicing their opinion* about my closing the board to the public ... and even in trying to explain my reasoning to them, they remained very negative and opinionated. And for some people with AOL email, they are still having difficulty receiving their verification and approval emails - which I don't know how to fix except to tell them to use an MSN or YAHOO email.
I have a feeling you will have less headaches and more sleep in the future if you choose to go this route.
Good luck, Heather.
Cindy

I think it's a great idea...
Cindy...I was sorry to hear of the loss of one of your mares this year..I posted quite a bit on your site last year..I apologise if I said anything to upset you....
I will be closing my board shortly, as I am fed up with small minded people giving others grief about things we hae no control over.

I too think it is a great idea and agree that one should have to register to watch the cams as well. Only glitch is that some folks have trouble being able to watch the cams anyway and registering may really throw them for a loop! This is the price you pay for success Heather!!! I think it will give your site more integrity and make it much more educational and informative.

Heather, I think it is a smart idea also. Heaven knows you have enough going on without some getting on here and starting trouble, or going to other message board and doing the same. You go girl!

I absolutely agree! Make registering mandatory. I am registered and think anyone who wants the privilege of viewing and posting should register.

I would have to agree with requiring folks to register for the message boards. I don't know if it's necessary to have to register to watch the cams, but I certainly wouldn't MIND that. ;D

I am all in favor of a "Members Only" board. Also being a moderator, I know I have not been available as much as I should have been. But that was because I was on a truck with my husband. Well, I am getting off the truck as of today. So, I would say that if I am needed by someone at ANYTIME then I am only a phone call away. I am willing to put my number on my personal info. So there would ALWAYS be a way of contacting me. I also have MSN and YAHOO messenger. I am open for anything I can do to help.
