I got a new vacuum cleaner six months ago. It was a gift and it's a Hoover Wind Tunnel. Well about 2 months into owning it, I noticed that everytime I emptied the canister, a TON of dust/dirt was falling out of the filter and onto the vacuum, and subsuquently onto my floor. I dealt with this for a few more months until I noticed that the supposedly "self cleaning" hepa filter was not turning like it was supposed too...not sure how long that had been happening for. So today I took it to the vacuum repair shop, and they want to charge me fifty bucks for a "tune up" and forty dollars for a new hepa filter, which will HOPEFULLY fix the problem, no guarantee. The guy there said that I will have to do this at least once a year. Well needless to say, the thought of spending ninety bucks every year just to maintain the darn vacuum seems silly to me. So I brought my broken vacuum back home and now I am trying to decide what to do. Do I dish out somewhere between 250-1000 dollars on a new better vacuum that they are offering there or do I just buy a cheaper decent vacuum and replace it if it wears out in a year? Any ideas? What are your thoughts on bagless canister vacuums vs. bag vacuums. Thanks!

Okay here are my vacume thoughts!!! ~Cheap bagless kind~ HORRIBLE......was constantly getting dirt and grime EVERYWHERE in my house carpets never looked really clean. I had to clean the canister every single time I vacumed. When I say cheap vacume Im talking about a Dirt Devil I think I don't remember now. ~Rainbow Vacumes~ Now these are the best vacumes I have ever used!! However they are really spendy (around $2400). But I think they are a pain in the tush....I feel as if I am walking an uncoroperitive dog through my house all the while hitting every wall I can find with the canister!!! However your carpents are incredibly clean and there is no dust as all the crap goes into the water. Now the water gets really nasty and again you have to dump out and clean the canister after every use. I no longer own one for those reasons stated. ~Kirby~ This is what I have now. They tend to last a LIFETIME. They are a little cheaper then the rainbow I honestly don't remember how much we paid for this one. It has a self drivin power on it so its really light to push. It comes with all the attatchments including the carpent cleaner. Actually the only thing I don't care for is the carpet cleaner on it. It doesn't do a deep down clean but does do a good job maintaining your carpets. Its bag lasts awhile and has a built in hepa filter IN THE BAG. Yes you get a small amount of dust lost when you empty the bag but nothing like the old bags that leaked dust or the canisters that get it everywhere. Hope that helped some!

Thanks BND!! Actually my friend was telling me about those rainbow vaccuums too today, that's funny, I had never heard of them before, now I have heard of them twice in one day! That sounds like a neat idea with the water , but wow, 2400 dollars is quite spendy!! I will have to look into the Kirby. I was reading on the Hoover website and it actually says that the filter is never supposed to need replacing, so I am going to try to get ahold of them. They are of course not open on the weekend so I will try them on Monday. The vaccuum cleaners the guy was trying to sell me today ranged from 257-1000 dollars each, and I was pretty unclear on what made these so special....I can not remember the brandname right now, I think Ricco or something. I think maybe he was trying to scam me because he was also supposedly an approved shop for hoover warranty work, yet he did not know that the filters should never need replacing, to me it seems that if the filter is needing replacing it should be under warranty, but what do I know! I have been hearing that bag vacuums are better than bagless, so if I do get a new one, I wil probably go with the bag one... So when I call Hoover, if they still say that the filter is not covered, I guess my predicament is, do I pay 90 bucks to get it fixed (and hopefully that actually fixes the problem) or do I start looking for something else?

Well, in my opinion VACUUMS SUCK! HAHAHA!! Actually, I don't have any carpeting in my house anymore and when I do need a vacuum I just use the good ole shop vac! I hope you get the advice you want, iluvhorses!

I love PWC's are they the ones with the tail or without? I have a Hoover, somewhere, I haven't used it in years! My husband called it a "dirt relocator". Now I have three "Hoovers" that pick up crumbs only... a border collie mix, a rough collie and Leroy (a foundling)! They are terrible when it comes to dog hair though!

This was our "dust-buster" - to get into places the vacuum can't reach!

ILuvHorses - In all seriousness, we pulled up our carpet (I got fed up with it) and we put in wood floors in November. I, like TwoSuperStudPonies, use a shopvac when we need to vacuum...It gets EVERYTHING up - It even sucked up a washcloth the kids left on the floors!

We have a Dyson, and love it! We have 4 cats and 3 dogs, so lots of pet hair and cat litter, and this thing sucks up everything in sight (and that you can't see!) It doesn't have any filters to buy or replace. It does have a HEPA filter on it. The one we have is purple and called "The Animal", designed for homes with pet hair. I think it was around $600. We were going through a vacuum every 2 years until we got this one. We've had it about 4 years or so now. It's great!

I love electrolux they are the best and last for years. They now have them in upright and canister. The canister had a power nozzle that sucks up everything.can be used on both carpet nd hardwood floors.I have the canister and it's over 10 years old. My other vaccum cleaner is below, here's his picture with his Suerte' shirt and pig.The pig goes everywhere.

I've talked to a lot of people who have said this is the only vaccuum out there that REALLY picks up dog and cat hair. It's pricey but I have heard it has changed people's lives because it gets up all the hair and dander so well.
