I have to ask....why not wear wool? No animal died for it and by golly, if I were a sheep or llama, I would only be to happy to be shaved every spring! I feel so sorry for the ones that don't get clipped. It has to be so uncomfortable for them to go through summer with that much coat.

Because a lot of times the sheep's skin is cut off with the wool, whether accidentally or not. Then it gets infected causing the sheep horrendous pain. I'm not talking about mulesing but that's pretty painful too and there are other options that can be done to prevent the fly problem without having to cut off the wrinkled skin around their backside.

I'm a strict vegan. I don't eat any thing that contains animal products like meat, poultry, fish, dairy, milk, eggs, cheese, jello, marshmallows and honey etc. I also don't wear any animal products like leather, wool or suede. And I can't afford fur, not that I would ever wear it if given some. lol. And I only use products that do not contain animal ingredients, and if I can't find or afford the product I only use companies that do not test on animals like Avon. I love the website veganstore.com. hehe GOOD for YOU, Allison!!!!I never gave a thought about foods like jello, marshmallows, honey......... as I sit here with a cup of tea on my desk with a bit of honey in it. oops. What is in jello that you won't/can't eat? Just never gave that a thought! I wish I could be a strict vegan. I just can't quite do it. I LOVE animals......... but, trick my mind into thinking what I'm eating wasn't an animal at one time. Otherwise, I just wouldn't ever eat... which probably would help me lose some weight. Allison, How do you do it? What does your daily diet consist of - breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks? This is very interesting..... I'm not sure I can watch the piglet cam knowing that they will end up as food. I know, it's a part of farm life, etc. I'm not a big fan of pork anyway. I'd have a very, very hard time selling the foals that are born, I'd get so attached.... much less eat my little piglet I raised. <gulp> But interesting thread......

I guess Allison, you have never seen a sheep or a llama with years of wool growth on it. I have and as far as I am concerned that is far more crueler than getting clipped with a clipper. They get horribly itchy and trip on their hair....it is neglect not to take care of them properly (in my opinion). Honey too??? I missed that. Bears eat it, why can't we?? LOL Is it because it is made by an animal?
I don't want to start an argument here, I am just trying to understand.

Guys I know I started this with the saying the piglets were going to be someones dinner more then likely, but can we keep it more on the thread rather then the vegatarian/vegan discussion? I commend anyone who wants to choose this lifestyle however its not for me and I know its not for some other people on this board. Before this gets a too far out of hand maybe the best thing would be to start another thread under off topics or possibly PM Allison directly. To each their own opinion but I don't want someone to feel they are getting dumped on because they choose not to eat meat, or honey, or wear wool clothing. They have their reasons and we may think that its odd but we are all a little odd in many different ways LOL!! I am terribly sorry if I offended anyone when I mentioned this cam, I just thought it would be something interesting to see (if we can get the darn cam working!). Take care all

I'd have a very, very hard time selling the foals that are born, I'd get so attached.... much less eat my little piglet I raised. <gulp> But interesting thread...... Thank you for your words of encouragement about my veganism! And to also answer your question about jello. Jello and marshmallows are made with gelatin and gelatin is made by using the hooves, skin and bones of cows and pigs. I'm sorry to be so gross but I just wanted to give you an honest answer. Honey isn't really a problem because the bees aren't actually killed to take their honeycombs and well they are annoying, pesky bees. LOL. But technically when the beekeeper takes away the honey he puts in a replacement food that will trick the bee into thinking their honey is still there. Well the bees know the difference and get so stressed out over it that many die. I just cut out honey from my diet because I wouldn't want to be labelled a "fake" vegan by PETA. I'm a PETA member and they always know everything. LOL I eat a lot of TVP which is texturized vegetable protein en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Textured_vegetable_protein which looks like ground meat but it's soy protein. I use that to make "tacos", or spaghetti with "meat" sauce, they even make "hot dogs", "burgers' and "chicken patties and nuggets" that are made out of the TVP. Truthfully I personally think they taste really good but other people who get up the courage to try it when with me say it tastes terrible. I also drink Rice Milk because even soy milk contains lactose which is an enzyme from a cow's stomach. They make TVP "cheese" too. Morningstar Farms www.seeveggiesdifferently.com/ and Boca www.bocaburger.com/ makes a lot of delicious products that I eat. But just not the ones with cheese since they use real cheese. Other than that I eat a lot of fruits, vegetables, and there actually is junk food that is what they call Accidentally Vegan www.peta.org/accidentallyVegan/ For snacks I usually eat sunflower seeds, peanuts (I'm allergic to other nuts) in the shell because they don't have anything added to them like preservatives to keep them fresh longer, soy nuts and unsalted plain rice cakes. But with the rice cakes I add strawberry jam (Smuckers because it's made with Fruit Pectin, not Gelatin) and Peanut Butter (the kind you can make yourself at Whole Foods). Believe it or not there a lot of things out there to eat that isn't disgusting tofu! LOL.

LOL Is it because it is made by an animal? I don't want to start an argument here, I am just trying to understand. Well you're right I haven't seen a llama or sheep with years of wool growth on it. But isn't that mainly from neglect by the owner? I mean can't they use scissors to cut off the wool without having to use the clippers that go right down to their skin? I'm not saying we should go to the opposite end of the spectrum and cause a sheep to suffer by letting their wool grow unmanaged, I don't want them to suffer any pain at all. I just think that maybe there are other options that a person can do or use without nicking or cutting the skin of a poor sheep.
