When did we get the ability to PM each other directly from threads (under the avatars)? How much of an idiot am I? Has that been there all along? I just noticed it last night. If it's new, THANKS! I love it! If it's not new, just try to ignore my obliviousness. :-)

I have a suggestion about farm phone numbers!
First of all, logically speaking why do we have Mare Stare, so farm owners don't have to keep their eyes on their horses 24 hours a day by allowing people all over the world in many different time zones to watch for them. So what good is it when a starer can't alert the owner to a horse in trouble? I totally understand if a farm does not want to post their phone number out in plain view but I do feel that each moderator should have immediate access to them! The situation last night with "Song", praise God, turned out to be okay but if it hadn't and something terrible happened to that horse while hundreds of helpless people stood by and watched in horror all becasue noone could find a phone number to call the owner would have been really bad for Mare Stare because again that is what MareSare is all about. Mare Stare allows the horse owner to be able to rest or leave the farm while others from all over the world check in on the mares (and newborn foals) and should be able to call or alert them somehow to trouble! If the owners are already aware of the situation then they are just allowing people to watch for entertainment and /or education purposes but if the owners are really unable to watch their horses then we have to be able to alert them somehow! The alert system now is set up so that only the already aware horse owner can send out a high alert which really just allows other people, mostly complete strangers, to view the foaling (don't get me wrong I think it's great) but how do we get through to owners when they are UNaware of the situation? My suggestion is to install an emergency button along with the "LOW ALERT" buttons, take the "high alert" away all together since only the cam owner can use it anyway. The Emergency Button would need 10 people to push it including a moderator, make it sound like an ambulance. Also I think the moderators should have access to EVERYONES phone number just in case the computer or the sound is turned off! Also when a farm has a mare on cam and they don't want a lot of unnecessary calls maybe they could have a special number set up by their phone company to give a different ring on their phone! That way when they hear the different ring they will at least know to check on their horse. If the horse is fine they can post an update on their MB or tell the person who called to post it or turn off the ringer or do something to tell the starers that all is ok! It was a terrible feeling last night to watch Song in so much pain and discomfort and no way of contacting help for her! I don't know if any of my suggestions have been helpful so maybe this is something that Heather and the others can work out! I just have this feeling that we got lucky last night and that the next time might not have such a happy ending!
Sorry for the rambling, I just feel very passionate about this issue!

TWOSTUD, I am going to have to back you up on this one myself. The feeling of being absolutely helpless for the first 15-20 minutes just trying to get attention to the thread was horrible. The thought of losing a mare from something that could have been life threatening is beyond my words right now. I understand the cam owners frustration with unnecessary calls in the middle of the night. I just hope something can come from this experience to make the Mares and foals safer in our presence. Please if anything take these ideas into consideration. Thanks Marybeth

A solution to this issue has already been in the works for some time. We are addressing it.

I would like to suggest a thread where barn owners who are in the nursery can go and request people to watch their foals or mares while they get some sleep. Especially those who have sick mare and foals.Once the mare have foaled unless you keep looking in the nursery all the time their request are missed.
Maybe a thread on the first line of nursery or even in foaling section.Where we could look and see who needs help.
Thanks Kim

I think blacklabs suggestion is an excellent one. I am home all day and I would certainly never mind watching for an owner who needs some sleep. With the different time zones of the members I am sure there could be some good teamwork put into place.

I like the idea also... maybe just sticky the thread somewhere we can see the mares & foals who need some "horsey-sitting" so their people can get some needed rest or whatever they might need a "horsey sitter" for. We will discuss this option, possibly on a very limited basis. I'll let you know.
Update: We will be making a sub board for Special Watch Requests. It should be up soon. It will ONLY be for short-term watches for owners, mares/foals with problems needing eyes, etc.

maybe you can make a sub board for like all the none horse horse (like donkeys and other animals that aren't horses)?
We have always tried to treat all cam owners equally, this includes non-horse owners. We have some cams that are not even foaling cams, they are just surveillance cams on their horses. We have talked about making some optional lists...a list by location (state/country) a list by breed, etc. and then you can click on the list that you want and use that.
It will take a bit of time to compile these, so it's likely that it won't be available until next foaling season.

Wow! Spiffy new cam page! It looks great. Now I have to work on my orientation. LOL! I'm glad I discovered it tonight, rather than in the morning, before coffee. I agree - I think it looks great. It's still a work in progress, but I begged Rich to put it up now because it looks so good. Rich is very talented - I'm glad to have him on our team
