Thanks, Genine. That's a vast compendium of reports! Now I am doing this thing where the more hopeful I become, the more worried I get. There are a lot of one-days-at-a-time ahead of Barbaro and his well-wishers. It's good to have sites where we can hold hands.

I feel like Barbaro belongs to all of us, and in a way he does. He is truly in all of our hearts now - and I am so thankful for ALL of you because we are able to support each other while we pray and wait anxiously for updates. I think we all feel connected to this horse in way now, and each other too. ::hugs::

Those X-rays are incredible! Gosh, where did you get them? Just how many pins do you see? I see 22, and a plate. Sooooooo many GOD, please bless Barbaro, so he recovers.
Man, that is intense.........

Dr. Richardson said there were 23 screws, he also said that the pastern bone was shattered into about 20 pieces! Unbelieveable that Barbaro is now able to put WEIGHT on it, let alone WALK!! ETA: Oops Regret, sorry - I didn't mean to practically repeat your post.

News Releases Gail Luciani (215) 898-1475 luciani@vet.upenn.edu Veterinary Update on Barbaro May 22, 2006 Barbaro rested comfortably Sunday night after having major orthopedic surgery at the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center. “He’s doing all the things a horse should do, including eating and nickering at the mares near him,” said Chief of Surgery Dean Richardson. “While we are optimistic, we remain cautious about his prognosis and are watching for signs of infection at the surgical site, laminitis and other possible aftereffects of the surgery.” Barbaro had fractured his right hind leg in three places during the running of the Preakness on Saturday, May 20. The bones were set and will be allowed to fuse in place over time, which means that recovery will take many months. Future updates on Barbaro’s condition will be posted on our Web site at www.vet.upenn.edu. The next update is scheduled to be posted Tuesday, May 23 at 3:00 p.m.

I don't know if anyone heard this yet, but it was on the radio this morning that when Barbaro's bone broke, it shattered into about 20 pieces. Prayers for Barbaro!!

Hey, Genine - thanks for the link to Bolton. In addition to the updates, they've got high-res versions of the xrays and post-op photos there. What a thing to behold!
