I’ve started a new thread for Daisy so that I would be able to change the subject lines when I need to. Please post on this new thread.
Daisy is currently due and Teyha her best friend and stall mate is keeping her company. (Teyha is wearing a Flymask so that you may tell them apart she is not due until September 6th).
Daisy Information and Story
Daisy joined our herd in January of 2007, I was warned by her previous owner that she was hard to catch, didn’t like brushing, feet trimming, doesn't lead, and was never cuddly. Daisy spent the first 14 years of her life with the herd she was born in (30+ jennets) and on the same farm, in 2004 she was sold when her breeder needed to reduce his herd, she went through two other farms in two years before arriving here, the last place that she was at there was only her and a jack until she foaled, it is my belief that she was never completely comfortable here because she didn’t have the security of a herd, even though she was dearly loved and still loved by her previous owner, (who calls and checks in on her). Daisy and I have been bonding since her arrival here but from the beginning she has allowed me to put her halter on and off, brush her, and in the last few month she has started cuddling with me on her own terms, and has started following me around while I do morning chores - waiting for itches or bum rubs. She does have a mind of her own at times but seems comfortable and relaxed with us and her new herd. Shortly after arriving here she bonded actually glued herself to Teyha, these dear old ladies do everything together and are stalled together at night. (a dear friend told me that jennets bond hardest with jennets close to their age which I have found to be true) I’ll be leaving Teyha in the stall with Daisy until Daisy tells us that she is no longer comfortable with Teyha in the stall and then I will move her to the stall right next to Daisy’s. Daisy has never had any assistance with foaling, and I’m not sure if she is going to appreciate our hands on style. With most of our jennets we are in the stall during the labor and delivery stages and then stay and imprint the foals. I will be watching Daisy and might not enter the stall until we see feet, I will let Daisy decide what she is comfortable with. Daisy was pasture bred last June, she started about two weeks ago with a very small udder that stayed level for a couple of weeks and then last Wednesday started filling her udder and loosened in the rump very quickly, currently she is fuller in the morning and softer at night when I bring her in. This morning I was able to express fluid from her teats - it was almost clear in color, her vulva has elongated and widened, the muscles are now completely loose on both sides of her tail and going down the back of her hips. I’ve seen mares/jennets at this stage level off again and stay the same for up to a couple of weeks, I’ve also experience mares and jennet at this stage that keep making steady progress and quickly foal, we would dearly appreciate extra eyes on her. Daisy and Teyha will be outside during the day, weather permitting, unless I feel that delivery is imminent or I have to leave the farm for a extend period of time, I will post either of these to this message board and I will try to post morning and night updates on Daisy.
Our Farm Preference: If you see a jennet in trouble or active labor and there’s no one in the stall please call, (if for some reason I’m unable to answer please leave a message - there are a couple of spots on our farm including the barn that my cell phone doesn’t work, as soon as I step away from these places my cell phone will ring with your message. (with Daisy I’ll have my daughter or a friend post to the board to let you know that we are aware of her being in labor since I might wait to enter her stall). We would also appreciate a call if our barn cam is down during the night for more than a few minutes.
Thank you so much for joining us in our barn and helping us welcome our newest addition.
