Hi all,
We are first time horse owners (Buttercup) and she was due March 15th.
Since Wednesday night she has been showing signs of going into labor. Throughout the night (Wed) she was laying down and getting up, biting at her sides and swishing her tail around and doing the yawning motion. I kept an eye on her all night as this is the first time we will experience a birth. My husband came home in the morning (Thursday; he works mids) and said that her belly was rock hard and her udder was full and also hard. He said it was sticky down there near her nipples. My girls, Amber and Ashleigh, went outside early in the morning to be with her. (She just loves the girls) Well, as the girls were out there, she kept laying down and groaning. She didn't lay on her side all the way, but half on her side and half on her bellly. She was also groaning as she was standing and walking around. We thought for sure yesterday she would have the baby. We went all day watching her. It seems as if she only will lay down when the girls are out there. I don't know whether to let them out there to keep her laying down and moving, or to have them stay in the house to leave her to labor herself. When she lays down, the girls go over to her and rub her and try to comfort her. If the girls don't go over there when she lays down, she gets right up. Thursday night, we kept vigil on her and all the same signs. She laid down around 11 pm, 1 am, 4 am and then around 4:20ish am. She was moaning as she was laying there. The last time she laid down, I called my husband home. Because she laid down twice within the half hour. So, I wasn't sure. Well, still nothing as it is 1 PM Friday. Should we be concerned and call the vet to get him out here to check her?
We are worried and unsure if this should be taking this long of labor?
Please email me at ttjab3@yahoo.com or on here as I will come back to see if ya'll have any thoughts as to help us.
Take care,
God Bless,
Tari
PS I forgot to mention that she has been sweating, stomping her feet and having the runny poops since Thursday morning.
